On another occasion, when I was repeatedly stalling the truck engine by popping the clutch too quickly, the instructor ordered me out of the truck’s cabin into the Siberian winter to start the engine by hand cranking it to save the truck’s battery. If I failed to notice it and name it properly, I had to immediately park the truck at the curb, get out and run all the way back to see the sign I missed. For example, when I was driving a full-sized truck on city streets, my instructor would occasionally ask me about a road sign we had just passed. Personally, I had similarly harsh, though way less painful, experiences when I was in high school back in Siberia taking truck driver classes. And mistakes are always punished with the nasty little shock.” Every time they flash more and more faces, then they show the same people in wigs, in make-up, in different clothes and in different attitudes. We have regular sessions of this and the speed with which the faces are shown keeps increasing. If I fail to press the button when I should I also get a shock. If I am mistaken, I shall feel a slight but quite unpleasant electric shock go through me. Whenever I see the same face come up on the screen, I have to press the button immediately. My finger is poised over a button as if on a trigger. Thousands of faces are flashed at me on a screen, as well as thousands of silhouettes. This form of mental activity has to be reflexive rather than analytical. “We are taught how to remember people's faces. Then, they had to bring the gun round back so the next time they would do their best to aim properly and not waste any shots.Īnother story comes to mind about the training received by Soviet military spies as depicted by Viktor Suvorov in his book Aquarium: Those who missed with their shots had to, as a punishment, grab a tank gun round (think about a pretty heavy dumbbell), run with it for one kilometer to their target and hit the plywood tank cutout manually with the shell. There is an urban legend about the training received by Soviet tank gunners that may or may not be true. You need to hit the target as close to the bullseye as possible with every shot. This very similar to target shooting practice – if you care about results, it isn’t enough to just shoot in the general direction of your target and not get hurt in the process. There is a huge difference between doing something and getting it done. First of all, what I’m trying to tell you here isn’t about the “Getting Things Done” methodology introduced by David Allen that has become quite popular among high achievers.
